정필도 목사는 1941년 10월 13일 서울 서대문구 현저동에서 출생했다. 창신 초등학교 6학년 때, 친구 이범호(창신교회 원로장로)의 전도를 받고, 교회에 첫 발을 들여 놓은 순간부터 하나님의 은혜로 복음을 받아들였다.

어린시절 아버지의 부재 속에 하나님이 아버지가 되신다는 사실이 가장 행복했던 그는 하나님 아버지를 가장 기쁘시게 하는 일은 오직 전도라는 생각을 가진 후, 학교에서 별명이 ‘정목사’라고 불릴 정도로 전도에 힘을 쏟았다. 하나님이 가장 기뻐하실 일을 생각하며 우리 민족을 전부 구원하겠다는 소원과 꿈을 안고 목사가 되기를 결심, 대한민국 복음화의 비전을 품게 되었다.

Rev. Pildo Joung was born on October 13,1941 in Seoul, South Korea. When he was a 6th grader at Changshin Elementary School, he first stepped into a church through the invitation of his close friend, Bumho Lee (who later became an elder emeritus at Changshin Church). By God’s grace he was able to respond to the Gospel in faith.

After losing his father at an early age, he was filled with joy and happiness by the fact that God had now become his Heavenly Father. After thinking that the best way to please his Heavenly Father is through evangelism, he began to devote all his energy to evangelism to the point where he was nicknamed 'Pastor Jou ng' at school. Thinking of what God would be most pleased with, he decided to become a pastor with a vision of evangelizing all the people of the Republic of Korea.

중학교 시절. 신앙을 지키기 위해 세 가지를 결심했다.

During middle school, Rev. Joung made three promises before God.

교회에 가서 기도한다.

한 장 이상씩 꼭 읽는다.

기도, 예배, 말씀, 이 세 가지를 통하여 신앙의 기초를 다지고 죄의 유혹 앞에서 승리할 수 있었다.

By keeping these three promises of daily prayer, attending worship, and reading scripture, he was able to strengthen the foundation of his faith and overcome the temptations of sin.
하나님의 다섯 가지 훈련

기도 Prayer

어려운 유년시절 지독히 가난한 상황에서 하나님만을 의지하며 기도하도록 훈련하셨다.

During his difficult childhood, even in dire financial situations, God trained him to rely only on Him through prayer.

심방 Pastoral visitation

주일학교 시절 목사님과 함께 환우의 가정에 심방하며 영혼을 돌보도록 훈련하셨다.

During high school years, he visited church members who were sick with his pastor. These visitations disciplined him to take special care of church member's souls.

금식 Fasting

세례를 금식기도로 준비한 것을 계기로 큰 일을 앞두고 금식기도 하는 습관을 갖도록 훈련하셨다.

Fasting before his baptism taught him the importance of fasting prayer prior to significant events for the rest of his life.

회개 Repentance

자신의 죄와 연약함을 고백하는 회개의 삶을 살도록 훈련하셨다.

God trained him to live a life of continual confession and repentance of his sins and weaknesses.

자기부인 Self-denial

억울한 상황에서도 대항하지 않고 자기를 부인하는 삶을 살도록 훈련하셨다.

When faced with unfair situations, God disciplined him to deny himself and only rely on God.

‘선교교회’로 시작한 교회는 이제 새롭게 ‘수영로교회’로 1975년 12월 14일 아직 공사중인 교회 1층 유년부실에서 입당예배를 드렸다. 매주 새신자가 등록했고, 일 년이 지나자 주일 예배 인원이 2백 명으로 부흥해 교회는 성장기에 접어들었다. 말씀대로 순종하기만 하면, 기도한 대로 필요한 것이 채워졌다.
교회를 처음 시작하면서부터 올려드린 100명의 선교사 파송, 100개의 농어촌 교회 개척이라는 기도 제목은 1978년 용당교회 개척을 시작으로 놀랍게 응답 되었다.
1981년에 접어들면서 교세가 급성장했다. 교인수가 1,000명을 넘어서면서 처음 지었던 성전에서 예배드리는 것이 불가능해졌다. 1982년 정필도 목사의 미국 유학 중에 새로운 성전 건축의 긴급한 필요성에 따라 부지 구입을 결정하고 건축 위원회를 조직하였다. 담임 목사 귀국 후, 당회에서는 새성전을 건축할 것을 의논했다. 문제는 예산이었다. 다시 하나님께 울며 도움을 요청할 수밖에 없었다. 하나님께서는 뜻밖의 말씀으로 응답하셨다.
“하나님의 일은 반대만 없으면 다 된다.”
교회 제직회는 아무것도 준비되지 않은 상황에서 반대 없이 1983년 새성전 건축을 추진했다. 1984년 광안동 성전(현 구성전)기공 예배를 드린지 6개월 만에 새성전 입당 예배를 드리게 되었다. 하나된 성도들에게 헌신하는 심령을 주셨고, 필요한 재정을 채워주셨다.

The church that started as "Mission Church" now newly began ’Sooyoungro Church” on December 14th, 1975. Every week new members registered and the church entered a period of growth. When obeying accordin g t o the Word , ever y nee d was met throug h prayer. From the beginning of the ministry, the church prayed with hope of sending out one hundred missionaries.

The church grew rapidly in 1981. With the number of believers exceeding 1,000, it became impossible to hold worship services in the original church building.

So in 1982, the church board decided to purchase land and organize a building committee in response to the urgent need for a new church building. After Pastor Joung returned from abroad, the board discussed building a new church.

하나님의 축복의 열매에 내 시선이 고정되는 그때, 나는 자신도 모르는 사이에 ‘교만’에 사로잡히고 말았다. 그런 생각이 들던 그 주간, 수요예배 시간이었다. 예배를 인도하려고 강단에 섰는데 어찌된 일인지 그 많던 교인들이 한 사람도 나오지 않았다.
“하나님, 제가 뭘 잘못했는지 모르겠습니다. 가르쳐 주십시오.” 목이 타들어 가는 절박한 심정으로 주님을 기다렸다.
“니가 해? 내가 하지! 니가 해? 내가 하지! 니가가 해? 내가 하지!”
세 번이나 연속된 주님의 말씀이었다. “아이고 주님, 주님….” 나는 주님의 이름을 연거푸 부르며 회개할 수 밖에 없었다. 주님은 더 세미하게 내게 말씀해주셨다. “네가 이 교회를 세운 게 아니고 내가 이 교회를 세웠다. 네가 설교를 잘해서 부흥된 게 아니라 내가 내 양 떼를 이곳에 보내서 교회가 부흥된 것이다.” 주님의 이 음성을 들은 이후, 수영로교회의 진정한 당회장은 주님이심을 언제나 잊지 않으려 했다. 아니, 잊을 수가 없었다.

At the time when my gaze was fixed on the fruits of Gods blessing, I was unknowingly ensnared by pride. During Wednesday worship that very week, I was standing at the pulpit to lead the worship, but for s이 ne reason, none of the many church members came.
”O Lord, I don't know what I did wrong. Please teach me.” With a desperate heart, I waited for the Lord.
"Is this your doing? It is my doing! Is this your doing?
It is my doing! Is this your doing? It is my doing!”
These were the Lord's words repeated to me three times. ”Oh Lord, Lord...1' I could only repent, calling out His name. The Lord spoke to me more gently. "It was not you who established this church but I. It was not your preaching that caused the revival, but I who sent my flock here that caused the revival.” After hearing the Lords voice, I reminded myself no, I could not forget that the true pastor of Sooyoungro Church was the Lord.

함께 엎드리다

엎드린 자리에 세워진 교회
수영 로터리 일대의 땅 3천 5백 평까지 넓혀나간 수영로교회는 만 명 이상을 수용하는 성전 재건축에 의견을 모았다. 그러나 교회 주변 주민들의 반대에 부딪혀 성전 건축은 설계도를 그리는 단계에서 멈추고 말았다.
IMF 외환 위기로 해운대구 우2동(현 새성전)의 땅 주인 80여명이 땅을 사달라며 찾아왔다. 예산이 없는 상황에서 땅주인들과 타협점을 찾던 중 처음 가격의 3분의 1도 안되는 가격으로 땅을 매입했다. 이 땅은 부산복음화대성회 집회를 할 때 성도들 전체가 무릎 꿇고 눈물로 기도했던 땅이었다.

1999년 8월 11일 새성전 기공 감사예배를 드리고, 헌금 작정 대신 기도 운동을 시작했다. 2000년 9월 24일부터 열린 수영로 40일 기도축제는 6,000명이 기도카드를 제출, 매일 24시간 릴레이 기도와 새벽 4시, 5시, 밤 9시 기도회에 연일 3,000여 명이 참석해 새성전 건축을 위하여 함께 기도했다.
“하나님이 주시면 하고 안주시면 못합니다.”
성도들은 계속해서 기도하며 하나님이 주시는 것을 기쁨으로 드렸다. 매립지였기 때문에 지반이 약할 것을 대비해 쇠기둥을 박으려고 깊숙이 파는 자리마다 바다 속 반석이 나타났다. 반석 위에 세운 교회는 2년 1개월 간의 공사 끝에 2001년 9월 16일 새성전 입당 감사 예배를 드리며 수영만 새성전 시대를 열었다.

Church Built on Knees

After Sooyoungro Church expanded the land to 11,570 square meters at Suyeong Rotary, they decided to expand the church building that can accommodate more than 10,000 people. However, it was met with opposition from the residents living around the church and the construction plans stopped at the stage of drawing the blueprints.

During the IMF foreign exchange crisis, more than 80 landowners of U2-dong (location of the current church building) in Haeundae-gu asked Sooyoungro Church to purchase their land. Having no budget, the church purchased the land at a price that was only one-third of the original price . This land was the same land where many church members knelt and prayed with tears during the Ichthys Busan Evangelization Festival in 1993.

On August 11,1999, the groundbreaking worship service of the new chu rch building was held, and instead of setting a fundraising goal, the church started a prayer campaign. The 40-day church-wide prayer festival began on September 24, 2000: 6,000 people submitted prayer cards, 3,000 people attended daily 24-hour relay prayers, morning and evening prayer meetings, praying together for the new church building project.

The believers continued to pray and joyfully brought forth what God had given them. The area was redaimed land, and fearing a weak foundation, engineers decided to drive steel columns to strengthen the foundation of the building. Miraculously, each time they dug deep into the ground, they came across large boulders of rock. Sooyoungro Church was built on these rocks and the construction was completed after two years and one month. On September 16, 2001, the New Church Building Inauguration service was held, opening the era of the New Sanctuary in the Suyeong Bay Area.

부산을 대표하는 교회로 성장한 수영로교회는 성장을 넘어 성숙으로 도약했다. 교회 안에 머물렀던 부흥의 열망을 교회 밖으로 과감하게 돌렸다. 부산 지역 성시화의 꿈을 가지고 지역 사회를 섬기기 위해 2009년, 엘레브 선교센터를 개관했다. ‘하나님의 마음’이라는 뜻을 가진 엘레브는 국내외 선교사역과 더불어 교회 밖의 지역 공동체를 섬기는 복합 공간으로 꾸며졌다. 다음세대를 섬기기 위해 2011년 5월에는 교육 센터를 개관했다.

교회의 모든 프로그램과 사역 방향은 이제 한국교회와 세계교회 향한 섬김으로 전환되었다. 2011년 설립된 수영로 여성신학원은 설립하고 목회현장에 필요한 전문 여 교역자를 양성해 한국교회를 섬기기 시작했다. 전 세계 88개국 1239명의 선교사(파송선교사 162명, 협력선교사 852명, 현지인선교사 225명)와 56개의 선교단체를 돕는 세계 선교의 전진기지로의 역할을 감당하고 있으며, 한국에 거주하는 이주 외국인들을 위한 외국어 예배부는 2023년 현재 11개국까지 확장되었다. 러브부산을 통해 부산 지역의 소외된 이웃을 섬기고, G&G (Grace & Growth) 리더십 컨퍼런스를 개최해 국내외 목회자들에게 수영로교회의 성장 비결을 나누었다.

Sooyoungro Church, which has grown to represent Busan, has gone beyond growth and made a leap to maturity. It boldly released the desire for revival that had been in the church to the outside. In 2009, ELLEV Mission Center was opened with the dream of evangelizing the Busan area, and ELLEV, which means "God's heart," was built as a complex space that serves both domestic and overseas mission work and the community outside the church. In May 2011, an education center was opened to serve the next generation.

All programs and ministry directions of the church have now shifted towards serving the churches in Korea and around the world. In 2011, the Sooyoungro Women’s Theological Institute was established and began to serve the Korean church by training much needed female pastors for the pastoral field. It has fulfilled its role as a base for global missions, supporting 1239 missionaries (162 dispatched missionaries, 852 cooperative missionaries, 225 local missionaries) in 88 countries around the world and 56 mission organizations. Through Love Busan, it serves its neighbors in the Busan area, and the G&G (Grace & Growth) LeadershipConference, shared with domestic and foreign pastors how Sooyoungro Church grew.

2011년 10월 12일 정필도 목사 원로 추대 및 이규현 목사 위임 예배가 은혜홀에서 거행되었다. 기도 목회로 성령님과 동행해 온 정필도 목사는 “목회가 쉽고 행복했다”라고 고백하며 하나님께 영광을 돌렸다. 수영로교회는 주님의 지상명령에 순종하여 교회 부흥과 부산복음화, 민족복음화, 세계복음화의 비전을 품고 달려왔다. 그 눈부신 부흥과 성장의 비결은 기도를 통한 성령의 역사였다. 정필도 목사는 은퇴를 준비하며 기도 후원자(청빙위원)들을 모아 후임 선출을 위해 기도를 시작했다. 후임 선출의 모든 과정은 순탄하게 진행되었다. 청빙 위원회와 성도들의 전폭적인 찬성으로 이규현 목사가 후임으로 결정되었다. 이규현 목사는 20년 전 5년간 수영로교회 부교역자로 사역했다. 이후 호주 시드니 새순장로교회를 개척하여 견실한 교회로 성장시킨 이규현 목사는 이제 한국교회를 향한 애끓는 사랑을 품고 수영로교회로 돌아오게 되었다. 주님께서 친히 세우신 수영로교회는 아름다운 사역 계승을 통해 연합하는 교회로 한 단계 비상하게 되었다. 축복하며 사랑의 직분을 이어준 정필도 목사는 이후에도 끊임없이 기도하며 중국과 러시아, 그리고 열방을 향한 복음 전파의 행진을 계속할 것을 다짐했다. 세계복음화를 향한 열망의 기도를 품고 나아가는 정필도 목사는 부산 50만 영혼 구원, 1만 사랑방 구축, 5천 선교사 파송의 비전을 이규현 목사에게 위임했다. 무릎 기도 목회는 철야의 영성으로 이어졌다. 부산 성시화 사역은 러브 부산 본부 설립 및 사역 확장으로, 농어촌 교회 섬김은 경남 임팩트와 도시 미래자립교회 섬김으로, G&G (Grace & Growth) 목회자 세미나는 목회 리더십 섬김 사역으로 이어지며 부산과 한국 교회, 그리고 열방을 섬기고 있다.

Carrying on the Torch

On October 12, 2011, Rev. Pildo Joung was appointed as Pastor Emeritus, and Rev. Gyuliyun Lee was appointed as the new senior pa sto r of Sooyoungro Church. Rev. Pildo Joung, who have walked with the Holy Spirit ill prayer and ministry, confessed that "ministry is all God's grace" and gave glory to God. Sooyoungro Church has been running with the vision of church revival, evangelization of Busan, evangelization of the nation, and evangelization of the world, in obedience to the Lord's Great Commision. The brilliant revival and growth was the work of the Holy Sp irit and it w as broug ht through prayer.

As Rev. Pildo Joungwas preparing to retire , h e gathered prayer supporter s (12 people in total , including Rev. Pildo Joung, 5 elders, 3 deacons, and 3 evangelists ) to begin praying for the selection of his successor. The entire process of selecting a successor went smoothly. With the unanimous approval of the selection committee and the congregation, Rev. Gyuhyun Lee was chosen as the successor. 20 years ago, Rev. Gyuhyun Lee had served as an associate pastor at Sooyoungro Church for five years. After that, he planted Sydney SaeSoon Presbyterian Church, which it grew into a healthy and faithful church. After many years serving in Australia, Rev. Gyuhyun Lee returned to Sooyoungro Church with a passionate heart for the Korean church. Through the beautiful succession of ministry, Sooyoungro Church, which was established and sustained by the Lord, was able to advance one step further. Rev. Pildo Joung, who passed on his role with blessings, continued to pray and str ive for advancing the gospel in China, Russia, and other nations. Rev. Pildo Joung entrusted the vision of the salvation of 500,000 souls, establishing 10,000 small groups, and sending 5,000 inissionaries to Rev. Gyuhyun Lee as he shifted his focus to world evangelism and missions.

The Prayer centered ministry was carried on through the All-Night-Prayer movement. The Busan Holy City Ministry was expanded with the establishment of the Love Busan Headquarters, the mission to rural churches was extended through the Impact Gyeongnam and rural church support, and the G&G (Grace & Growth) Pastor Seminar led to the Church Leadership Serving Ministry. Sooyoungro Church continues to serve Busan, the Korean church and beyond.
